General Race Information

  • The Spring and Fall Series are each scheduled for five races. Please see Race Instructions above.
  • The Thursday Night Series A & B are each scheduled for five races. Please see Race Instructions above.
  • The Saturday Skippers Meeting will be held 1 hour before the race scheduled start unless otherwise indicated.  At the discretion of the race committee, the race may be delayed to await favorable winds.  Skippers and their representatives are encouraged to attend the Skippers Meeting.
  • The race fee is due before the start of a race. Fees may be paid for each race, or for an entire series on a discounted basis.  Fees include a social hour after the races, normally with beverages sponsored by the Race Committee.
  • Each race will be On the North East River beginning and ending at, or near Day Marker #14.
  • The committee boat will monitor VHF Channel 71.
  • The race course will be displayed on the committee boat. The letters will be hung on the side of the boat opposite the starting line, so as not to interfere with the race course.
  • SCORING: The Low Point scoring system is used for the Spring and fall Series.
  • Scoring for NERYC Series Races is done using the Performance Handicap Racing Fleet (PHRF)  system, on a time-distance basis.
  • A boat's finishing position is used as her race score, except first place boat will receive a score of 0.75.
  • A boat that came to the starting area but did not start, did not finish, or was disqualified shall be scored points for the finishing place one more than the number of boats that started the race
  • A boat that did not come to the starting area shall be scored points for the finishing place one more than the number of boats entered in the series as of that date  except Race Committee- see next rule.
  • A skipper serving as Race Committee shall receive points for his or her service equal to the average of his or her best three races of the series, provided that his or her class is racing. He or she shall only committee one time for the purpose of point retention in a series. Race committee points will be calculated at the end of each series.
  • Spring and Fall sail racing series total scores shall be based on each yachts best 3 races of the series, which may or may not include Race Committee duty point calculation at end of series.
  • A minimum of two boats appearing at the start makes a race.
  • Ties will be broken in favor of the boat that had the most firsts, seconds and so on, and if a tie still remains, then in favor of the boat ahead in the last race.
  • A race can be postponed or cancelled due to unsuitable weather, at the discretion of the Sail Race Committee.
  • If a series consists of five completed races, the series score will be determined by adding each boat’s three best scores. The winner will be the boat with the lowest total score. A boat must complete at least three races to qualify for the series title.
  • Any boat which is disqualified from a race may not use that race as a “discard” race, regardless of how many races are completed in that series. For scoring purposes, a disqualified boat will be assigned a score equal to the total number of boats in its class in that race plus one.
  • The season title for each fleet is determined by adding each boats final standing in the Spring and Fall Series.  A tie would be broken in favor of the boat with the most first place finishes in the combined Spring and Fall Series.  If a tie remains, total second, third, and subsequent finishes would be compared until the tie is broken.
  • RACE RESULTS: Will be announced as soon as possible after the race and will also be published on the NERYC web site.
  • All trophies will be awarded at the annual Sail Awards Banquet in November.
  • The Invitational Race start will be off Turkey Point in the vicinity of RG A mark. The course will be set and announced by the Race Committee on race day. The time interval between fleet starts for the Invitational will be determined on race day by the race committee. Results and prize-giving will take place at the post-race party after the race at NERYC.  See NOR
